In 2007, racing at a clydesdale weight I competed in my first Olympic distance triathlon. Despite the cramps, heat and lack of conditioning, once I crossed that finish line I knew I was hooked.
In 2010 I successfully completed my first Ironman and while preparing for this race not only did I learn many valuable lessons about myself and what I was capable of, I was also able to get my health back on track and lose over 25 kilograms in the process.
Since 2010 I have raced throughout Canada, USA, Mexico and Australia, competing in six Ironman races and numerous Ironman 70.3 and Olympic distance races. I have also had the opportunity to race triathlete bucket list regulars Escape from Alcatraz and the Hell of the West.
Growing up as a competitive swimmer one of my childhood dreams was to represent Australia in sport. In 2011 I was able to realise my dream when I was selected to wear the green and gold at the ITU Long Course World Championships in Las Vegas.
As a Brisbane-based long-term member of T:Zero Multisport, I am honoured to have the opportunity to join Rich, Scotty and Em and continue the high standard of coaching this team offers, reaching a new set of athletes - whether they are embarking on their triathlon journey or simply “weekend warriors” looking to achieve a new level of success.
Having trained with local squads and also via correspondence while living overseas, I can appreciate both the difficulties and benefits of each method. Throughout my sporting life I have worked with a number of experienced and dedicated coaches, and the key principles of consistency, commitment, communication and perseverance are always evident in their programmes and practice.
As a coach and athlete I believe that to reach your potential and truly appreciate the results when they come, you must seek a balance within all aspects of your life. This includes home/work/triathlon, and, in training, mental/physical. I strongly believe that one cannot obtain or truly appreciate the successes if the other areas have been neglected. With this in mind, I am focussed on fully customising the programmes of my athletes to make the best use of available time in order to maximise results.

What athletes are saying about Steve:
I worked closely with Steve in preparation for Ironman New Zealand 2017. We had 6 month preparation that also included Christmas and the holiday period. During this time Steve balanced my shift work and family commitments with consummate ease and was always receptive to change. He dealt with illness (not training related) and my poor sense of humour and got me to the start line in the best condition I have been in my entire life. His race advice and support were crucial in helping me overcome all the adversity Ironman throws at you and I know that this will not be the last time we work together. - Patrick Shanahan - Multiple Ironman Athlete
