WORLD CHAMPION TRIATHLETE BRINGS TRAINING CAMP TO CAIRNS At the start of April, Age group Ironman World Champion, Richard Thompson and Scotty Farrell and their coaching group, T:Zero Multisport, is hosting its first Long Course Triathlon Training Camp in Cairns, to be based out of the Royal Lifesaving Headquarters adjacent to the Smithfield swimming pool. Richard has been on countless triathlon training camps since he started in the sport 15 years ago. "Some camps were really great, but unfortunately some where really lacking" says Richard reminiscing on his time as an age grouper and as a professional triathlete.
While racing as a professional triathlete, six years ago, Richard turned his attention to coaching and now, together with Scotty Farrell (an age group Ironman champion as well) formed T:Zero Multisport. Richard explains what is involved with the camp, "When we started to run training camps with T:Zero Multisport, we wanted to take the things we thought were great from the camps we had been on in the past and improving them. The goal is to offer a safe, encouraging, fun environment, without any egos, for athletes to get through some great sessions, pushing to reach their potential as well as offering great presentations by industry professionals (physiotherapists, sports psychologists, nutritionist, yoga instructors). Of course, the athletes have full access to myself & Scotty throughout the camp" And this formula appears to be successful. T:Zero Multisport offered a New Years training camp on the Sunshine Coast, which was sold out within 2 weeks of releasing. "We had a great turn out at the New Years camp, and some really encouraging feedback". From 1-3 April, the Cairns triathlon training camp is a few months out from the Cairns Airport Cairns Ironman and Cairns Ironman 70.3, and is designed for those athletes participating in the race. "We will be giving a lot of focus to the race (Cairns Ironman and 70.3)" Richard says. "From going over the course, to race day pacing and nutrition plans, we hope all athletes leave the camp feeling much more confident going into the Ironman". But the camp isn't just focused on triathlon. "We acknowledge that a lot of Cairns athletes are taking part in the team events, so we are also offering the camp to these athletes, come to the camp, take part in the training sessions of your chosen sport and listen to all the content from the presenters" Richard explains. The Camp will be supported by a number of local businesses including Pump n' Pedals Cairns, Cairns Sports Performance Clinic, Cairns Innovative Physiotherapy, Foher Multisport, Marlin Coast Swimming Pool and Fitness, Smithfield Cairns & Cairns Beaches Yoga. As a bonus for Cairns locals, for those who enter the camp between Wednesday 23 March 2016 and Wednesday 30 March 2016, will go into the draw to go to the camp free of charge!
